Mile 10: Great-Uncle Gerald - Colon Cancer

Gerald Zutz
October 21, 1936 - April 28, 2006

My cousin, Janelle, had these words to say about her dad:

In December of 1999 my father, Gerald Zutz, got his annual flu shot and ended up getting sick with pneumonia. Having pneumonia brought him to the doctor, only for them to discover that he had colon cancer. He was treated with chemo treatments for a year and was told that he had recovered from colon cancer.
Then in January of 2005, he fell on some ice and broke some ribs. Through the testing and scanning for the broken ribs, they discovered that he now also had liver cancer. They treated him with chemo for the cancer and radiation to help fight off the cancer. This time it was too much and he didn’t recover. He passed away April 28, 2006, at the age of 69.
Through all of his treatments, it was hard to see him struggle. He would fight to stay awake throughout the day because he was always tired. It was hard to get him to do anything or go anywhere because he didn’t have the energy and food didn’t always sit well with him.
I did expect him to make it through because we had so many things going on that year. Jerilynn was graduating, I had my wedding, and it was my parents' 25th wedding anniversary. But it was his time to go and end his suffering and pain. I can remember him moaning at times because he was in pain, and for a daughter to hear her father in that kind of pain, you prayed that the Lord would take him to a better place - no matter what we had going on that year.
My words of motivation are: "Run the path of life to the fullest, never look back, and cherish every moment as it was your last."

In honor of his birth month, October, Gerald will represent Mile 10.

Make a donation in memory of Gerald and others we have lost, those still fighting, and those who may one day be spared this fight because of what we‘re doing.
Give to make yourself a part of this historical effort.
